The US Treasury has imposed sanctions on Iran’s BitBank, a cryptocurrency exchange accused of processing Bitcoin payments connected to Iran’s maritime operations in the Strait of Hormuz. According to CoinTelegraph, BitBank facilitated the movement of hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin tied to this scheme.
The payments processed by BitBank reportedly supported the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a powerful branch of Iran’s military. The US Treasury’s action aims to disrupt financial channels that enable the IRGC to fund its activities through digital assets.
For Japanese investors and traders, this development highlights ongoing regulatory risks in crypto markets where geopolitical tensions influence asset flows, particularly involving digital currencies linked to sanctioned entities.
